A: The company and the union reps had a meeting today to try and resolve their problems.

B: I heard that the union chief was accused of living high off the hog on union dues.

A: 그 회사와 노조 대변인들은 그들의 문제를 다시 해결하기 위해서 오늘 미팅을 했어.

B: 난 그 조합장이 노동조합 회비로 호의호식하며 지내다가 비난 받았다고 들었어.

 

live high off the hog : 돼지고기 중에서 가장 맛있고 비싼 안심이나 등심 부위가 hog(돼지)의 허리 윗(high) 부분이다. ‘좋은 음식을 먹으며 유복하게 살다’ 라는 의미로 off 대신 on을 쓰기도 한다.

scrape by : 정말 필요한 것만을 사기 위한 돈만 충분히 갖고 있다. 즉, ‘이러 저럭 생계를 꾸려가다. 간신히 살아가다’ 라는 의미이다.
